Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop phonetically-balanced one-syllable word lists for kindergartners and school-aged children.

Method: Considering the phonetic elements, 200 monosyllabic words were divided into 8 lists of which 4 lists were developed for kindergartner (HU-PBK) and the other 4 lists were developed for elementary students (HU-PBS). Each list was phonetically balanced to obtain the distribution of vowels and consonants. Subjects were 20 normal hearing elementary students, 28 normal hearing kindergartners and 20 hearing impaired children. The test was presented using a compact disc with the open set procedure.

Results: Results showed as follows£ºFirst, word recognition scores measured by HU-PBK and HU-PBS were increased as the stimulation level increased. Second, there was no significant difference in gender. Last, it did not show significant differences among the developed lists in the degree of difficulty.
¡¡
Conclusion: It is suggested that the HU-PBK and HU-PBS be suitable and reliable for evaluating children¡¯s word recognition ability and give useful information for auditory rehabilitation, and selecting hearing devices for children.
